CBE Technologies' FireTower and Martin's Point Health Care Complete Testing of Biometrics System for Electronic Health Records
Posted on: Tuesday, 8 November 2005, 09:01 CST
CBE Technologies and its subsidiary FireTower recently completed proof-of-concept testing of a biometrics and access application that speeds and secures admission to electronic health records (EHR) by health care providers, while lowering management costs. The new system is a critical component in the rollout of an EHR system at Martin's Point Health Care clinics in Maine and New Hampshire beginning this fall.
CBE Technologies, the New England-based provider of information technology and telephony services, and FireTower, its subsidiary specializing in information security, provided systems integration for the biometrics and related software configuration at Martin's Point. This configuration is critical for provider access to medical records in a way that meets the security and patient privacy guidelines and regulations of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) and DITSCAP (U.S. Department of Defense Information Technology Security Certification and Accreditation Process).
During the proof-of-concept testing FireTower worked with Martin's Point to integrate password management, two-factor user access authentication, patient information applications, and centralized management technologies. Biometric thumbprint technology positively identifies and authenticates authorized EHR system users with Citrix Password Manager software granting appropriate network and health record access. CBE and FireTower will implement and support these technologies at Martin's Point clinics.
"Having electronic health record access controlled with a thumbprint reader is a great example of our investing in advanced information technology to enhance the quality of care," said Greg McCarthy, Martin's Point's director of information services. Martin's Point will begin field testing the EHR system within the next month, with completion of a system-wide rollout to its three clinics in Portland and Brunswick, Maine and Portsmouth, New Hampshire by March 2006.
