Ship collision causes oil leak near Venezuela's Maracaibo shipping lane
CARACAS, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- A Danish oil tanker started to spill oil after colliding with a Liberian freighter 80 km off Venezuela's Maracaibo shipping lane, Maracaibo Port Capt. Oscar Ramirez said on Monday.
He said the collision occurred on late Sunday between an oil tanker, owned by the Danish shipping giant A. P. Moller-Maersk, and a freighter, transporting coal, owned by the Liberian shipping company Pequot.
The collision has caused the leaking of a bunker tank, filled with around 550 cubic meters of fuel oil, on board the Danish tanker, the captain also said.
He added albeit the lane was shut down for a few hours to remove the two vessels, the voyage schedules of the other tankers were not affected, and Venezuela's crude oil export remained operative.
Around 2,000 oil tankers sail across Venezuela's Lake Maracaibo, which is connected to the sea, each year, and more than 1 million barrels of the country's daily crude oil export are transported through the lake according to official statistics.
