Nov. 9--TOKYO -- NTT DoCoMo Inc. said Tuesday it will start Dec. 1 a credit-payment service using its mobile phones equipped with electronic-money functions.
The service to be offered under the brand name "iD" will be initially available for holders of credit cards issued by Sumitomo Mitsui Card Co., which is NTT DoCoMo's credit card business partner and the nation's second-largest card firm.
According to the major mobile phone operator, the users of Sumitomo Mitsui cards must first download a special application into NTT DoCoMo's "Osaifu-Keitai" mobile phone equipped with wallet functions.
Then the users can make a payment just by waving the handset in front of dedicated readers at stores. No signature or PIN numbers will be required for purchases under 10,000 yen, the company said.
In case a phone is misplaced or stolen, the users can call a designated phone number to immediately lock the phone. They can also choose to make all payments require a password.
NTT DoCoMo plans to issue its own credit card in the first half of fiscal 2006 beginning next April.
