IPMobile to Enter the Mobile Broadband Market in Japan Using IMT-2000 3rd Generation UMTS TD-CDMA Technology

TOKYO, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday, the Radio Regulatory Council of the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) have made a recommendation to allocate the 2GHz spectrum to IPMobile Incorporated ("IPMobile"). With this decision, IPMobile will enter the mobile broadband market using TD-CDMA (also known as UMTS TDD), a 3rd generation IMT-2000 technology. By introducing TD-CDMA, as well as a new business model, IPMobile will create a "mobile data communications market" in Japan.
IMT-2000 technologies currently used in Japan, CDMA2000 and W-CDMA, have been developed mainly for voice usage. TD-CDMA is the IMT-2000 technology suited for high-speed mobile data communications, and has been deployed and commercially proven in more than 20 countries worldwide. IPMobile will be the first operator to implement TD-CDMA in Japan, and will combine the merits of the technology with an all-IP network to build an infrastructure that will serve as an important backbone for the next generation network society. IPMobile is eager to incorporate such new technologies and contribute to advancing the mobile internet environment.

IPMobile expects to introduce data communications services in Japan's three major cities, Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, in October 2006, with nationwide coverage to follow by 2012. Upon initial launch in October 2006, IPMobile plans to offer a flat rate Mobile Broadband services with downlink speeds up to 5.2Mbps and uplink speeds up to 858Kpbs. Coverage will be planned according to regions where there is high demand of data communication services, and areas where there is low broadband penetration regions. The commercial rollout plan calls for 3,000 base stations to be deployed by year end 2007, 8,500 base stations by 2012.
A variety of high speed data communication terminals will be available including card-type, embedded, modem devices, and portable devices. Card-type terminal will include PCMCIA, CF, and SD formats and are ideal for notebook PCs to enable outdoor internet connections. Embedded-type terminals will power machine-to-machine services. Because TD-CDMA can support a large number of simultaneous connections, it allows for a low-cost flat-rate data communications service for terminals embedded in machines like vending machines, meters, and remote monitoring systems, as well as for vehicles. Modem devices will be provided to areas where fixed-line broadband connection is difficult and limited. Portable devices will act as a gateway, integrating TD-CDMA for a connection to the internet with WLAN/ Bluetooth connections to various digital equipment such as mp3 music players, portable games, digital cameras, etc.
IPMobile will provide an open business model based offering an MVNO option. The flexibility of IPMobile's MVNO model will activate the market, allowing new players to provide new and innovative services. Business partners will be able to provide their own wireless broadband service with various entry points, platforms, user equipment, and applications.
TD-CDMA technology from IPWireless is an IMT-2000 standard technology, and the evolution roadmap is defined by 3GPP.
