Korea's Largest Service Provider Selects Lucent Technologies for Next Generation Network Trials; Lucent provides APX 8000 Universal Gateway system to KT

Posted on: Thursday, 26 June 2003, 06:00 CDT

SEOUL, Korea--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 2003--Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced that it has signed a contract with KT, South Korea's largest communications service provider, to supply its Trunk Access Gateway system for KT's next generation networks (NGN) test bed. This will help KT to determine how best to move traffic from circuit networks to IP-based NGN.

Under the terms of the contract, Lucent will deploy its APX(R) 8000 Universal Gateway system in KT's NGN test bed at the Research Center in Daeduk by the end of July. The APX(R) 8000 will act as a media gateway to transmit public switched telephone network traffic to a packet-based network by interfacing with KT's Softswitch. In moving into NGN, three components are crucial:Trunk Access Gateway, Softswitch and Line Access Gateway. Lucent supplied AnyMedia(R) Line Access Gateway for KT's NGN access build-out as a primary supplier last October.

"KT is recognized as a service provider actively moving towards IP-based next-generation networks. The APX(R) 8000 Trunk Gateway technology coupled with our outstanding local technical support will help KT successfully establish a stable NGN test bed, " said John Yang, president and chief executive officer, Lucent Technologies Korea. "It is very significant as this represents continuous great opportunities for Lucent to work closely with KT as a technical partner in designing their future networks. We have been working with KT for over 23 years and now, on a whole new level, we are devoted to helping our customer create new profitable services. "

The Lucent APX(R) 8000 system is a carrier-class access switch optimized for seamless integration of dial, voice-over-IP, fax-over-IP, virtual private network, and other IP services. The APX(R) 8000 supports any service on any port at any time, and features uniform capacity for consistent application performance and density. The multi-protocol system support includes: H.248, IPDC, SIP, H.323, V.92, Personal Handyphone System (PHS) and achieves toll quality voice that meet G.711, G.729, G.728, G.723.1 standards.

Lucent has previously provided KT with switching systems such as the 4ESS(R) Toll Switch and 5ESS(R) Switch for the voice services, broadband access systems and optical networking systems including 2.5G, 10G SDH, DWDM, and DACS to build backbone networks since the 1980s.
