Sony BMG Retreats on CD Security Software

Sony BMG Music Entertainment said Friday it was suspending production of CDs with its controversial XCP copy-protection technology.
The move follows by one day alerts from all major security firms that a Trojan horse was using the XCP software to hide malicious files, Information Week reported.
As a precautionary measure, Sony BMG is temporarily suspending the manufacture of CDs containing XCP technology, the company -- a joint venture by Sony and Germany's Bertelsmann AG -- said in a statement.
We also intend to re-examine all aspects of our content protection initiative to be sure that it continues to meet our goals of security and ease of consumer use.
