MX Logic CTO Scott Chasin to Speak at CSI 32nd Annual Conference and Exhibition; Chasin Will Discuss the Evolution of Web Site Spoofing at High-Profile Computer Security Event

Posted on: Monday, 14 November 2005, 09:00 CST

MX Logic Inc., a leading provider of innovative email defense solutions that ensure email protection and security for businesses, service providers, government organizations, resellers and their customers, today announced that its Chief Technology Officer Scott Chasin will present at the CSI 32nd Annual Computer Security Conference and Exhibition, scheduled for Nov. 14-16, 2005, in Washington, D.C.

Chasin's presentation, "The Evolution of Web Site Spoofing: From Phishing to Pharming," will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 1:45 p.m. ET.

Phishing attacks -- luring end users to click on a link in an email that takes them to a spoofed site -- have grown increasingly sophisticated and targeted, giving birth to pharming attacks. Pharming is a more stealthy attack that maliciously redirects end users to a fake site when the user attempts to access the real site.

"Pharming is phishing without the lure," Chasin said. "Pharming represents the lack of trust that exists in the address field of any Web browser. Crimeware downloaded onto local applications and DNS-cache poisoning techniques can reroute Web addresses to rogue sites and end users have no way of knowing that they have been maliciously redirected."

In this 60-minute session, Chasin will explore the increasing sophistication of phishing and pharming attacks and address ongoing efforts to stem these threats, including emerging technology solutions, industry cooperation, public policy and end-user education.

A leading visionary in the messaging industry, Chasin is credited with inventing Web-based email and delivering the first IP-based, commercially hosted messaging service supporting thousands of businesses and millions of end users worldwide. Chasin also pioneered early industry efforts in computer security by forming one of the first Internet security consulting firms in 1990. His information security efforts continued with the creation and moderation of the first full-disclosure security discussion list, Bugtraq. In addition, Chasin was a key contributor to the creation of the first open-source, one-time password system, S/Key. He represents MX Logic on the board of directors of the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG), a non-profit coalition of worldwide carriers and technology providers dedicated to eradicating messaging abuse.

Computer Security Institute (CSI) is the world's leading membership organization specifically dedicated to serving and training the information, computer and network security professional. Since 1974, CSI has been providing education and aggressively advocating the critical importance of protecting information assets.
