SecureWorks Brings Fortune 500 Security to Businesses of All Sizes With Its New Protocol Recognition Capability and Enhanced Desktop and Denial of Service Protection

Posted on: Monday, 14 November 2005, 09:00 CST

ATLANTA, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- SecureWorks, ranked as the 39th fastest growing technology company in the country by Deloitte, is bringing Fortune 500 security to businesses of all sizes by adding Dynamic Protocol Recognition and enhanced Desktop and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Protection to its Managed Security Services.

SecureWorks' managed intrusion prevention service is enabled by an appliance called the iSensor. Built into the new Version 5 of the iSensor(R), the Dynamic Protocol Recognition capability applies the most appropriate countermeasures based on the content of the traffic traversing the network, regardless of the port used. Traditional security solutions choose countermeasures based on the port that the traffic is traveling across. Such assumptions make it possible for hackers to disguise attacks and penetrate systems.

SecureWorks has also expanded the iSensor's database of countermeasures for protecting against attacks intended for the desktop environment and has enhanced its Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Protection.

Key Components of iSensor Version 5

Dynamic Protocol Recognition. With this new capability, SecureWorks is able to identify the type of traffic (web, instant messaging, email ... ) traversing the client's network by the content of the traffic, as opposed to what port it is being transmitted through. SecureWorks then applies the appropriate countermeasures against the specific traffic, thus further protecting their clients from malicious attacks.

For example, instead of assuming that all traffic going through Port 80 is web traffic, SecureWorks is able to specify if the traffic is truly web traffic or if it is something else, such as instant messaging. It then applies the appropriate countermeasures to weed out any malicious attacks. Being able to correctly identify network traffic produces fewer false negatives and false positives.

"We found that many of our clients would run servers on non-standard ports and not alert us. This poses a definite security threat if malicious content is traveling across those ports, and the networks are not armed with the correct countermeasures," said Jon Ramsey, SecureWorks' Chief Technology Officer. "With our new Protocol capability, we are able to deploy the appropriate defenses against any traffic traveling across our clients' networks, no matter what port it uses."

Enhanced Desktop Protection. The security community has become very proficient at protecting servers; therefore hackers are changing their strategies and attacking desktops more frequently. To combat this growing trend, SecureWorks has added a new layer of protection for the desktop by developing a host of new countermeasures on the iSensor. Thus, if any malicious attacks (such as Trojans, worms, spyware, etc.) are sent across the client's network targeting the desktop, the iSensor detects them and eliminates them immediately. With this new functionality, large numbers of desktops can be defended from one location. This makes it easy to update and manage, keeping defenses current. The Enhanced Desktop Protection is an excellent supplement to anti-virus software because it ensures that if an organization accidentally fails to keep their anti-virus software current then their desktops are still protected. Additionally, the further away you can keep malicious content from the desktop the better.

Enhanced Denial of Service Protection. There are an increasing number of distributed denial of service attacks being targeted at the small and mid-size enterprise. During a "SYN flood attack", the iSensor is capable of filtering the "SYNs" that are part of the attack, while allowing the legitimate ones to pass.

Home Federal Bank has been beta testing Version 5 of the iSensor. "We've had V 5 installed for several weeks, and it has already detected and eliminated numerous malicious attacks which were directed at our servers, as well as our desktops," said Bill Sutphin, Security Officer for Home Federal Bank.

"We have been especially impressed with the enhanced Desktop Protection, which found multiple threats targeted at our desktops and extinguished them immediately. As hackers become more sophisticated and motivated, it is critical to protect against all types of threats. Having the Protocol Recognition Capability, as well as the Desktop Protection and Distributed DoS Protection, is extremely important to us because these vulnerabilities are key targets for hackers," continued Sutphin.

"It is SecureWorks' goal to provide our clients with the very best security services available to the market," said Mike Cote, president and CEO of SecureWorks. "SecureWorks employs the industry's top security analysts to monitor our clients' systems 24x7x365 days a year. This live, hands-on expertise, combined with the most sophisticated security tools, enables us to provide Fortune 500 Security to all of our clients but at a price point which is affordable to mid-size businesses. We are very proud of our new service offerings and will continue to raise the security bar with future enhancements."
