Text of report by Kenyan Capital FM radio on 16 November
A vernacular radio station broadcasting from Nairobi has been shut down by the government following complains over its broadcast content.
Officials from the Communications Commission of Kenya [CCK] raided Kas FM this afternoon and ordered its closure for one week pending investigations.
The station's general manager, Joseph Towett, has told reporters that CCK officials asked the broadcaster to provide a recording of their broadcasts for the last three weeks to assist in the investigations. They have also been ordered to report to CCK next Wednesday [23 November] for a meeting to explain why their licence should not be revoked.
The letter from CCK cites a warning issued in parliament earlier this month by Communications Minister Raphael Tuju that radio stations broadcasting inflammatory messages risked being shut down.
