6WIND Contributes to Success of KDDI's Mobile Broadband Project

6WIND (www.6wind.com), leader in IP networking software, announced today the successful integration of its 6WINDGate(TM) software to enable continuous "always-on" mobile broadband internet trial for KDDI, Japan's market-dominant 3G operator and second largest communications carrier. The development-ready 6WINDGate(TM) software incorporates one of a few commercially-available mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) technology, a key requirement of the project to create seamless roaming over any wireless and IP network infrastructure.
"The main goals of the sizable project for KDDI were to achieve scalability and to carry out vertical handoff between different radio and IP links using MIPv6. 6WIND's software flexibility and features enabled us to timely build into our trial network architecture, servers and terminals to execute mobile IP scalability and manage effective vertical handoff. And since the software runs on standard COTS platforms, we optimized our investment by using generic cost-effective hardware," said a KDDI spokesperson.
"This achievement reaffirms the intelligence and innovative framework of 6WINDGate(TM), our Open Network Engine software. KDDI is possibly the first operator in the world to create a trial for always-on and ubiquitous mobile broadband networks using latest mobile IP technologies. We are proud of having contributed successfully to this significant milestone for KDDI and the Japanese market," said 6WIND CEO, Alain Daste.
Japan is the third largest broadband country in the world after the USA and China with over 17 million broadband lines in place early 2005. Fierce competition among its top three telecommunications service providers, KDDI included, is driving remarkable growth of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and triple play services, continued third generation (3G) services with uptake of Fibre-to-the-Home (FttH), digital and mobile broadcasting. Significant ICT developments are expected in the near future as the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) plans to completely replace current infrastructure of domestic fixed lines with IP-centric systems to create e-Japan by 2010.
6WINDGate(TM) Software Suites
6WINDGate(TM) software suites provide the fast path to product design for networking system vendors of converging multi-services IP gateways meant for SOHO, SME, enterprise and ISP applications. Field-proven with patented technologies, they incorporate the market's first comprehensive IP-agnostic(1) COTS control and slow path data plane features for routing, security, QoS, mobility, IPv4-IPv6 transition, device and service management. 6WINDGate(TM) is distributed over Linux operating systems and held together by 6WINDGate(TM) XMS (eXtensible Management System) for easy software integration and flexible customization. It is easily portable on single processor architectures (eg. Intel's x86 or IXP4xx) as much as on more powerful distributed fast path processing architectures (eg. Intel's IXP2xxx). All of 6WINDGate(TM) software comply with IETF and open industry standards, and has been successfully pre-validated to run on several off-the-shelf hardware reference designs. (1) Internet Protocol version agnostic, refers to the ability of 6WINDGate to support seamless networking on any IP infrastructure without favoring IPv4 or IPv6, having been developed ground-up to support both.
