University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Selects LogicLibrary's Logidex to Govern SOA Initiatives

Posted on: Thursday, 17 November 2005, 09:00 CST

LogicLibrary(R), the leading provider of software development asset (SDA) management tools, today announced that the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), one of the most renowned academic medical centers in the U.S., has implemented its Logidex(TM) mapping and discovery engine. UPMC will use Logidex, the most widely-used metadata repository for SDAs, to govern and manage a major software project and maximize reuse of software components in the development of an inventory management application.

With 40,000 employees, 19 hospitals and a network of care sites spanning a 29-county service area, UPMC is the premier health system in western Pennsylvania. As a $5 billion organization and the region's largest employer, UPMC has created a genuinely integrated healthcare delivery system and recruited superb physicians and researchers in the fields of transplantation, oncology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, rehabilitation, geriatrics, and women's health. The organization's rapid growth has been supported by significant investments in information technology (IT) that link and integrate electronic medical records across multiple hospitals and care environments. This process led to the creation of a number of new initiatives, including a component library that will be driven by Logidex.

"UPMC needed a tool that will enable the organization to embrace Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA), as well as meet the guidelines of regulatory and industry mandates, such as Sarbanes-Oxley and Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI)," said UPMC Enterprise Middleware Group Director Duane Falk, who is responsible for integrating the medical center's various IT systems. "Products that we have used in the past to keep track of software development assets have lacked the broad functionality that our development efforts require. UPMC was looking for a solution with rich features and easy integration with other toolsets. We have found these qualities in Logidex."

Logidex will allow system architects at UPMC to document all of the information associated with the project as well as to help expose reusable code across the organization. UPMC expects to also improve its tracking of documents and processes, enabling the IT organization to better understand when coding is completed.

"Western Pennsylvania is fortunate to have one of the finest medical centers in the world in UPMC. To help such an esteemed institution work more efficiently with their IT projects is particularly gratifying for us at LogicLibrary," said LogicLibrary CEO Greg Coticchia. "Using Logidex, UPMC's development teams will be able to foster better communication around assets, access and share components, source code and best practices, and truly embrace the great potential of SOAs."
