University of Utah Health Sciences Selects AppSense to Lower Costs, Increase Performance of Critical Applications

Posted on: Thursday, 17 November 2005, 09:00 CST

Estimates 20% Reduction in Server Farm, 50% Improvement in User Load for Cerner and Epic Implementations

AppSense, a specialist in system performance and security, today announced that the University of Utah Health Sciences Center (UUHSC), a leading health services institution since 1965, has selected AppSense Performance Manager to optimize performance and lower costs of its extensive Cerner Millennium and Epic deployments.

AppSense Performance Manager enables IT to dynamically control processor, memory and system resources, and consolidate system infrastructure. UUHSC, which is in the process of implementing the AppSense solution, expects to reduce its Citrix server farm by 20% and increase user load on its Cerner and Epic implementations by 50%, all while improving application response time for its 12,000 users.

"Our Cerner and Epic implementations are large and complex, and we really wanted to simplify the way we manage them while providing users with better performance," said Josh Fleming, senior systems administrator, UUHSC. "With AppSense we'll be able to add many more users on the farm without purchasing additional hardware--in fact, we'll reduce our server count and conserve power in the data center. Not only will AppSense save us time and money in equipment, replacement and troubleshooting, it will increase our ROI significantly."

Based on its tests and initial roll-out, UUHSC expects to realize several critical benefits including:

-- 15-20% reduction in server farm over next 2 years, as UUHSC replaces its current servers with HP blades

-- 40-50% increase in user load with Cerner, and 50-55% increase with Epic

-- Enhanced performance and user load for UUHSC's Softricity-enabled virtualized applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and key financial programs

-- Improved application response time

In addition to using AppSense Performance Manager, UUHSC is also hoping to implement AppSense Application Manager, which automatically blocks 100% of unauthorized applications and executables, enabling IT to proactively secure systems in ways previously not possible.

"UUHSC is clearly committed to excellence in healthcare services. We're extremely pleased they chose AppSense to ensure that their IT infrastructure also meets the same high standards in performance and cost-effectiveness," said Paul Kenyon, Co-founder and VP of Business Development, AppSense.
