London, Nov. 17 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Hitachi Ltd. has said it will join forces with Imperial College London in research into railway engineering technology in a bid to promote the localization of its railway business.
Hitachi said on Wednesday it will sponsor a three-year research program in new areas of railway technology, such as energy consumption, environmental impacts of rail vehicles and fracture analysis of rail components.
The railway research team of the college will also analyze mainland European railway standards and strategies, and conduct technical research on such areas as hybrid propulsion configurations and lifecycle costing methodologies.
Through the partnership, Hitachi wants to further localize its railway business in Europe, said Stephen Gomersall, Hitachi's chief executive for European operations.
In June, Hitachi won a 65-billion-yen contract from the British government to supply and maintain 168 carriages and engines to be used for Britain's high-speed train service--the company's first deal to export trains to Europe.END
