GCN Insider: Getting Wyse to Thin Clients

In an interview with GCN a week before he rolled out several new initiatives, John Kish, CEO of thin-client pioneer Wyse Technology Inc., said there had been "an upsurge of thin-client interest" in government. Kish said agencies wanted to secure computing environments and lower the overall cost of desktop systems. Thus Wyse's recent moves.
To start with, Kish said Sun Microsystems Inc. would start reselling Wyse thin clients running Sun's Secure Global Desktop Software (Sun will still sell its own Sun Ray thin clients). In addition, Trusted Computer Solutions Inc., which makes secure information-sharing software for DOD and others, developed a thin-client version of its SecureOffice NetTop 2 product. NetTop is licensed from the National Security Agency and runs on Security Enhanced Linux. High-security agencies can now run it with Wyse thin clients.
Kish said Wyse had also agreed with Computer Associates International Inc. to integrate its thin-client manager with CA Unicenter in order to give admins a single point of management for all systems (on the flip side, CA's security tools will become part of Wyse Device Manager). Why Unicenter and not, say, IBM Tivoli? Kish said it was the first of many management suites Wyse planned to work with. "We've defined an API layer to make it more integratable," he said.
