FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Airlines and the sports venues bearing its name in Dallas and Miami are joining with the Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Stars and Miami HEAT sports teams to collect "Gifts for Soldiers" this holiday season. Fans attending games in early December at American Airlines Center in Dallas and AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami are encouraged to donate items for delivery to soldiers at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, the largest American hospital outside the United States.
"'Gifts for Soldiers' is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to honor and recognize these men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country," said Dan Garton, American's Executive Vice President-Marketing. "During the holiday season, especially, when many of these soldiers cannot be with family and friends, this program is one way to send these patriots our thanks and good wishes."
Donated items will be shipped to Germany in mid-December by American Airlines Cargo with the assistance of volunteers from Airline Ambassadors, an organization that assists people around the world.
"This is a great opportunity for fans to get involved and directly affect the lives of U.S. military personnel serving overseas during the holidays," said Dallas Mavericks President/CEO Terdema Ussery. "It is through this gesture that we all say thank you to these courageous men and women who are working hard and risking their lives to protect our freedom."
At Landstuhl, the gifts will be delivered to servicemen and women by performers from the USO, by the Mavs and HEAT dancers, and by the Stars' Ice Girls.
"The Dallas Stars are very honored to participate in this fantastic effort to bring joy to these brave men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces," said Dallas Stars President Jim Lites. "We are all very thankful for the protection they provide each and every one of us."
Items requested for donation are listed below. Please note that items will need to be small enough to fit in a backpack and should be for male and female soldiers:
* T-shirts * Baseball caps -- sports teams and novelties * CDs -- music of all types * CD players * Batteries * Jogging and sweats outfits * White socks * Shoe inserts * Personal hygiene products * International telephone calling cards * Small hand-held or board games [e.g., game boys, chess, checkers] * Stationery supplies, including pens, writing paper and envelopes * Holiday candy * Beef jerky * Chewing gum * Lip balm
