Texas Sues Sony BMG for Violating Anti-Spyware Law

Posted on: Tuesday, 22 November 2005, 18:00 CST

Silicon Valley, Nov. 21 (Jiji Press)--Texas on Monday filed a lawsuit against Sony BMG Entertainment alleging that the firm's music compact disc content protection software violates the state's anti-spyware law.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott accused the company of quietly including the software on some of its music CDs and creating serious security holes in users' computers, terming the act as engagement in "a technological version of cloak and dagger deceit against consumers."

Sony BMG, a music company held equally by Japan's Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann AG of Germany, installed the software in order to prevent unlimited copying and illegal redistribution of those CDs.

But it was discovered that when users play the discs on their computers, the anti-piracy software is automatically installed and results in making the computers vulnerable to hacker and virus attacks.

In view of growing criticism, Sony BMG has decided to recall as many as 2.1 million CDs for exchange with XCP-free ones.

Regarding the software, consumers in California have also recently filed a damages lawsuit against Sony BMG.END
