When "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" just aren't enough: Soon TiVo customers will be able to watch their favorite shows on Apple Computer Inc.'s trendsetting iPod music player.
Alviso, Calif.-based TiVo Inc. - a digital video recorder service - will allow its subscribers to transfer recorded shows to Apple's recently released iPod video player and to Sony Corp.'s handheld gaming device, the PlayStation Portable, the company announced yesterday.
Apple has an exclusive partnership with Walt Disney Co. to make ABC and Disney Channel programs available to its video-equipped iPods through Apple's iTunes music store for $1.99 a download.
But customers who use TiVo's "TiVoToGo" feature, which lets subscribers move recorded shows from the DVR to a personal computer, will be able to use iPods to watch programs while on the move.
The service will be available only on TiVo Series2 subscriptions, which cost $12.95 a month or $299 for the lifetime of the DVR box. Customers will have to purchase additional software that enables the transfer of the shows to the portable devices.
TiVo described the move yesterday as a natural evolution as it makes its services available to mobile devices.
"It's really just an incremental delivery into the mobile space," said Jim Denney, vice president of product marketing. "As other devices make sense to add, we'll add them."
