Moscow, 23 November: A new mine detector is being developed by the research and development test institute of the Russian Railway Troops, Col-Gen Grigoriy Kogatko, Railway Troops commander, told Interfax-Military News Agency Wednesday [23 November].
"The new device will make it possible to probe railroads to the depth of five metres at a speed of 60 kph," Kogatko said.
He emphasized that the new device was intended not only for the search of explosive devices with metal casing but also for those without casing. The work is being carried out in cooperation with geologists, so that the new device will be of dual-use.
According to him, only an experimental model has been assembled so far. Moreover, due to the lack of military funding, military railroaders are looking for commercial railways' investments.
"I think that the device might be of interests for commercial railway sector as well, for it allows scanning railroads and detecting defects and distortions in them, which may affect train transportation in general," he said.
Maj-Gen Viktor Poplavskiy, Railway Troops' research and development test institute director, told Interfax-AVN that the September tests showed that the device detects 80 per cent of cased mines. "As for uncased explosives, we are still collecting statistic data, and it would be premature to speak of device's effectiveness in this sphere," he said.
Poplavskiy pointed out that in case sufficient funding is provided, the device will be ready to operate in 2-3 years, after which it may be adopted for service. He underlined that before seeking priority budgetary support of this project, the institute should finish the development of the Spektr-T device, the work on which has been on without any significant progress since 1997.
