Latest Computer Virus Uses CIA, FBI Cover

November 23, 2005

The latest computer virus uses e-mail purportedly coming from an FBI or CIA agent to worm its way into computers.

The e-mail is signed by a Steve Allison, who works for either the FBI or the CIA, depending on the version. It warns recipients that they have been visiting a banned Web site and has an attachment claiming to be a questionnaire.

Unwary users who open the attachment launch the W32/Sober virus, which then mails itself to everyone in their address book, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Both agencies have put out press releases to notify the public that they do not monitor e-mail and warning anyone who gets the Steve Allison message to delete it without opening the attachment. The FBI has also opened a criminal investigation.
