Lucent Technologies to Build Provincial Backbone Transport Network for Hunan Unicom in China

Posted on: Thursday, 19 June 2003, 06:00 CDT

BEIJING--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 19, 2003--

LambdaUnite(R) MultiService Switch (MSS) and Metropolis(R) ADM

MultiService Mux to Increase Network Capacity

Lucent Technologies today announced that it has signed a contract with Hunan Unicom, a subsidiary of China Unicom, to build its provincial backbone transport network with Lucent's optical solutions.

Hunan Unicom will be deploying a wide range of products from Lucent's line of Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) optical transport systems. Under the terms of the contract, Lucent will supply Hunan Unicom with a variety of optical systems, including the new Metropolis(R) ADM MultiService Mux, LambdaUnite(R) MultiService Switch (MSS) and the WaveStar(R) ADM 16/1. Lucent will also deploy network management systems including the Navis(R) Optical Element Management System (EMS) and the WaveStar(R) ITM-SC to help Hunan Unicom smoothly integrate Lucent's hardware into its existing SDH network.

For the project, LambdaUnite(R) MSSs will be deployed to form the core of the network. This will connect the 2.5G rings throughout the province, and the 10G rings connected to data centers and long-haul switch centers.

"We are pleased to address Hunan Unicom's growing business needs by deploying Lucent's network transport equipment," said Jason Chi, chairman and president of Lucent China. "Our products will help Hunan Unicom significantly upgrade its backbone transport network in terms of system capacity, technical advantage, reliability, security as well as operational flexibility."

About the Solution:

Developed by Bell Labs, LambdaUnite(R) MSS bridges traffic between data-intense metro networks and high-speed optical core networks, connecting cities, campuses and corporate networks to larger, long-haul public networks. The product enables service providers like Hunan Unicom to seamlessly upgrade their networks to 40 gigabits per second (Gb/s) and allows them to deliver new value-added services such as gigabit Ethernet. The compact size and low energy requirements of LambdaUnite(R) means operators can make significant cost savings compared to traditional systems. This flexible single-shelf system was recently optimized for smaller metro applications, supporting in-service upgrades from 160G to 320G, as well as to 640G, allowing the system to grow when network capacity increases. Mesh restoration capabilities were also added to help carriers migrate to new mesh-based networks, while at the same time, leveraging traditional protection architectures.

Metropolis(R) ADM serves as an integrated Ethernet-over-SDH multiplexer, enabling service providers to migrate from existing time-division multiplexed (TDM) networks to data-aware packet networks. Adding data services to optical networks increases revenue potential for customers and helps them offer a wide variety of new Ethernet services. Metropolis (R) ADM integrates seamlessly into Hunan Unicom's existing infrastructure, avoiding the need for an overlay network built for new services. The product integrates 2Mb/s access and cross-connect functionality for 10 Gigabit-per-second(Gb/s) applications, helping carriers save on capital expenditures, and its low power consumption and small footprint will help Hunan Unicom save on operating expenses.

With a deployed base of more than 25,000 systems worldwide, the WaveStar(R) ADM 16/1 product is Lucent's successful optical multiplexer for the SDH market, and can be used for interoffice, access or regional applications. The system does this by combining multiple low-speed electrical and optical inputs into a single 2.5 Gb/s signal.

The Navis(R) Optical EMS and the WaveStar(R) ITM-SC are part of Lucent's Navis(R) Optical Management Solution, a portfolio of software products that provides comprehensive and integrated management solutions for optical transport networks.
