Regional Transit Board Extends Manager’s Contract

Nov. 29–SACRAMENTO — The Regional Transit board on Monday extended its general manager’s contract three years, partly because directors don’t want to lose her, Chairman David Sander said.

The bus and light-rail district board also voted to give General Manager Beverly Scott a $12,334 bonus, slightly less than the maximum annual incentive allowed under her contract. The one-time payment is not considered part of her $167,000 salary.

Scott indicated she is not looking for a job with another agency.

“There have been some folks who have talked to me, but I haven’t actively pursued them,” she said. “I’m here in Sacramento for the long haul.”

Scott was in the third year of a five-year contract. Based on Monday’s unanimous vote, that contract now extends to October 2010.

“This is a good way for us to reinforce our belief that she is doing a good job,” Sander said.

Scott’s contract also calls for automatic annual pay raises of 3 percent, Sander said.

Vic Guerra, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union, which represents bus drivers, called the contract extension premature. ATU has found itself at odds with Scott more often on contract issues than it expected, Guerra said, including an effort by RT to allow private security guards to join union members in issuing citations on light-rail trains.

“Let her finish her five years, and see what she does, then evaluate her,” Guerra said.
