CANNES, France -
New Gateway Enables 3G Wireless Providers to Offer High Margin
3G-Based Visual Communications Services
Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), and RADVISION (Nasdaq: RVSN), an industry leader in video telephony infrastructure solutions, announced its collaboration to add RADVISION’s new viaIP gw-P20/M Gateway into its already extensive portfolio of solutions for the 3G/UMTS marketplace.
Designed for service providers looking to capitalize on their 3G/UMTS networks by offering differentiated, high-margin multimedia services, the RADVISION viaIP gw-P20/M gateway supports real time video telephony sessions between 3G-324M enabled cell phones/PDAs and multiple IP and ISDN-based videoconferencing systems. The system is based on the 3G-324M standard for real-time multimedia communications over WCDMA and CDMA2000 3G/UMTS networks.
This partnership is a significant milestone in the industry and at this year’s 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, Alcatel and RADVISION demonstrated, for the first time, a live 3G/UMTS network with video telephony services between 3G/UMTS videophones and traditional IP-based videoconferencing devices.
The Alcatel Video Telephony Solution extends basic mobile-to-mobile video telephony services offered by a 3G/UMTS technology. This new solution helps mobile operators launch their 3G/UMTS network by offering them a flagship 3G-only service that will attract end users and generate significant revenues, enabling UMTS videophones to call or receive calls from other IP videophones already deployed. Business users can also participate in videoconferences using their UMTS videophone, making video telephony attractive to business users and corporate customers.
The solution includes the Alcatel 5020 Softswitch acting as an H.323 gatekeeper, which manages the fixed IP videophones or PCs with an embedded Webcam and a broadband connection to the Internet (xDSL, cable modem or corporate).
“Alcatel is happy to include RADVISION’s gateway in order to match mobile network operators needs for attractive services in order to leverage the costly investment in 3G/UMTS infrastructure with a powerful application that is unique to 3G. It is thus a significant step to persuade end users to switch to 3G/UMTS technology” declared Marc Rouanne, Chief Operating Officer of Alcatel’s Mobile Communications Group.
“Alcatel has long been seen as one of the leading providers of solutions that enable carriers to deliver high margin services and applications over 3G/UMTS wireless to customers worldwide,” said Gadi Tamari, Chief Executive Officer of RADVISION. “With the addition of RADVISION’s new 3G gateway to its product portfolio, service providers who are Alcatel customers will now be able to augment their 3G service offerings with a powerful visual communications tool for business and consumer applications.”
