Dec. 2--OSAKA -- Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said Friday its plasma TV panel plant in Hyogo Prefecture will begin operating at capacity next July.
The major home electronics maker moved up its schedule by four months in view of brisk demand for its flat-screen TVs. The production capacity of the plant, which began operation this September, will double to 3 million units per year.
The measure will boost the company's overall output capacity -- it also has plants in Shanghai and Osaka Prefecture -- to more than 5 million panels a year, the highest in the world, according to Matsushita officials.
Fixed manufacturing costs at the Hyogo plant are more than 70 percent lower than that at the company's Osaka plant, which came on-stream in 2001, as the former facility assembles panels using larger glass substrates and has taken other steps to improve efficiency.
Matsushita said it hopes to raise its share of the global plasma TV market to 40 percent in the future.
