By Kyodo News International, Tokyo

Dec. 5--TOKYO -- Japanese ship operators Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. said Monday they will jointly launch a new container service to connect Asia, Mexico and South America in April 2006.

The new service, called New Andes, will replace the current joint service with London-based Royal P&O Nedlloyd N.V. which will be dissolved by the end of March 2006 as the English company will be acquired by the Danish A.P. Moller-Maersk Group by the end of 2006.

New Andes will provide weekly service with nine containerships in the 2,000 TEU class, with one TEU equal to one 20-feet container.

Although calling ports for the new service have not yet been decided, the two companies plan to strengthen their business in the Chinese market with Shanghai at its center, while serving established ports on the West Coast of Mexico and South America.
