Dec. 5--MATAMOROS -- A local Mexican media group says it plans to expand to several Hispanic markets in the United States after the success of two local news Web sites.
Local Televisa anchor Fructuoso Saenz launched the Tamaulipas En Linea Web site in April, followed by the Texas En Linea Web site in October.
Both Spanish-language news digests are updated around the clock and include original and breaking news reporting, in addition to reposting the top stories and work of local journalists.
"Our operation is very virtual," Saenz said. "We neither have an office, nor paper."
Both the Tamaulipas and Texas Web sites are organized by cities or regions of each state and highlight the top stories in issues of high interest to Hispanic readers, such as immigration and education.
The Texas Web site features news from the Spanish-language media outlets of the Rio Grande Valley.
Although individual media outlets have their own Web sites, Saenz said Tamaulipas En Linea and Texas En Linea provide a regional perspective and help to cultivate and grow the audiences for local newspapers or other media outlets.
The Tamaulipas En Linea Web site has received more than 131,133 hits since it was first launched in April.
Saenz said the Tamaulipas and Texas Web sites have a growing presence on search engines such as Yahoo, Google and MSN, prompting him and his partners to believe they can duplicate their success in other Hispanic markets.
The Matamoros journalist said his group plans to use the news digest format to bring regional Spanish-language news to markets such as California, New York, Arizona and New Mexico.
The group plans to build similar Web sites for cities such as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, he said.
