Southwest Jet Plows Through Airport Fence

Posted on: Friday, 9 December 2005, 00:00 CST

A Southwest Airlines jetliner overshot a runway at Chicago's Midway International Airport in the snow Thursday, crashing through a fence into a city street.

As many as 98 people may have been aboard Southwest Flight 1248 from Baltimore to Las Vegas, WBBM-AM, Chicago, reported.

Witnesses said the Boeing 737 slid off the runway and came to a stop in Central Avenue, just south of 55th street after hitting at least one vehicle.

The jetliner's nose gear collapsed and its right engine was damaged, but there was no fire and no reports of injuries aboard the plane.

WMAQ-TV reported up to 11 people were injured, but there were other reports that only five people in cars on the ground were injured. One of the injured was reported in critical condition.

The pilots and passengers remained inside the airplane as ambulances and rescue vehicles arrived at the scene and were safely evacuated.

The incident occurred about 7:10 p.m. CST as the 737 was attempting a landing during a snowstorm. WBBM-TV said 10 inches of snow had fallen at Midway -- 3 inches in just one hour.

A passenger on the jet, Stanley Denn, told the TV station it did not look as though the runway had been plowed.

More than 400 flights were canceled at Midway and O'Hare International Airport because of the bad weather.
