Virgin America Moves Closer to Launching International Traveler / Update: CHICAGO

The British holding company the Virgin Group said it had raised the $177.3 million needed to start a low-fare airline in the United States, and submitted an application with the Transportation Department for an operating certificate. Virgin America is planning to operate on longer-distance domestic routes between major cities including New York and its home base, San Francisco, the company said Thursday.
The airline said that it would be ready to begin services in mid- 2006.
