Motorola Installs Mobile Data Solution for Basel Ambulance Service, Switzerland

Posted on: Monday, 15 December 2003, 06:00 CST

BASINGSTOKE, U.K., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. Commercial, Government and Industrial Solutions Sector (CGISS) today announced that working in partnership with Motcom Communication AG in Zurich, it has completed the installation of new mobile data software for Basel Ambulance Service. The system will provide information from the control room quickly and efficiently into the field.

The system was installed in two phases and was finalised with the mapping component in June 2003. The wireless data software, Motorola's Premier MDC(TM), extends data and information from databases in the dispatch office into the field. This means that ambulance workers have the latest incident information, including patient history, as they step out of their vehicles. The system also provides detailed information about the target location as part of the automated mapping system. This information was formerly only retrievable via radio contact or sometimes it couldn't be accessed at all.

The software resides on mobile data computers or terminals, which are installed in the vehicles, such as Motorola's MW800. Ambulance workers in the field will be able to access information on vehicles, people and property.

The Basel Ambulance Service serves a population of almost half a million people and receives an average of 20,000 emergency calls per year. Bruno Muller, IT Director, Basel Ambulance Service, commented: "We needed a mobile data system that could provide immediate, detailed incident and location information to our response vehicles, allowing faster response times to emergency calls."

The Premier MDC system is installed on Microbus Mobile Data Terminals and also includes in-vehicle mapping. The system seamlessly interfaces with the existing computer-aided dispatch and API (Application Programming Interface) to message switch systems.

The Premier MDC system includes Global Positioning System (GPS) capabilities that allow Basel Ambulance personnel to view latitude and longitude data on screen at all times and identify their exact location when writing incident reports or when requesting back-up assistance on a long stretch of highway.

"We are pleased to provide this state-of-the-art technology to the Basel Ambulance Service. This project represents an important milestone as other agencies and organisations throughout Switzerland and Europe decide to implement mobile data solutions," said Brett Smith, Product Portfolio and Marketing Manager for Motorola CGISS' Integrated Solutions Division.

The Basel Ambulance mobile data system is the first Premier MDC system using General Packet Radio System (GPRS) software in Europe. This system also represents Motorola's first mobile data ambulance contract in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
