Port of Bellingham, Wash., Names Marine Director

Posted on: Tuesday, 13 December 2005, 18:00 CST

By John Stark, The Bellingham Herald, Bellingham, Wash.

Dec. 13--Dan Stahl, executive director of the Port of Anacortes the past five years, will be the Port of Bellingham's new director of marine services. He will take over the $96,000-a-year post early in 2006 after he develops a transition plan with Anacortes officials.

Stahl will replace Stephan Jilk, who is leaving the post to become general manager of Whatcom County Public Utility District No. 1, a position held by the retiring Tom Anderson.

As marine services director, Stahl will oversee 2,100 marina slips in Bellingham and Blaine, the deep-water shipping terminal, and Bellingham Cruise Terminal. He will also spearhead port plans to develop a new marina in the wastewater treatment lagoon that the port acquired last January from Georgia-Pacific West Inc.

Stahl has a bachelor of science degree in marine transportation from Maine Maritime Academy and a master of science degree in ocean systems management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also completed the University of Washington's Public Executive Program.
