Dec. 14--The number of passengers using Piedmont Triad International Airport fell for a sixth consecutive month.
There were 100,332 boardings in November, a 16 percent decrease compared with November 2004. The airport has had 1.2 million passengers so far this year, a 2.9 percent decrease from the same period in 2004.
The passenger update was provided yesterday during the monthly meeting of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority.
The passenger shrinkage is compounded by the fact that the airport is also losing daily flights. Delta Air Lines Inc. and US Airways, major airlines for PTIA, eliminated a total of 12 flights at the airport this month. As a result, daily flights at the airport decreased to 80 in December, down from 92 last month.
Delta 's passengers were down about 17.3 percent and US Airways passengers dropped 33.6 percent in November.
Spokesmen for Delta and US Airways have said that the flight cuts are all a matter of matching flights with passenger demand.
Johnson said in an interview that the airport is dealing with a completely new market in which three airlines are in bankruptcy and a fourth just exited bankruptcy.
"We've never had airlines in the financial conditions they're in, so it's going to be a learning experience for us," he said.
He said that airport officials are talking to low-fare carriers about providing services at the airport to help create competitive fares.
He said that America West Airlines, which recently merged with US Airways, touts itself as a "real low-fare carrier," so airport authority officials hope that it will offer competitive fares that will attract passengers.
In other business, the airport authority agreed to buy 0.6 acres with a house at 111 Arrow Road from Ricky and Jennifer Comer for $85,000.
Johnson said that the property is an in area off the end of the runway that is being built at the airport to support the FedEx hub also under construction there.
