NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Nova Southeastern University's Fischler School of Education and Human Services announces the publication of the December/January issue of Innovate ( http://invateonline.info/ ). Articles in Innovate's latest issue are summarized below:
Technology and Education - Innovative Ideas in the Classroom
In today's technology-infused world, students at all levels need to be given a greater role in the education process, according to leading author and advocate Deneen Frazier Bowen. Keynote speaker at the 2005 National Educational Computing Conference (NECC), Deneen examines the importance of allowing students a greater voice in their education to help shape the ways that technology works in their schools and in their real life.
The article, titled "Taking a Journey with Today's Digital Kids: an Interview with Doreen Frazier Bowen," published in the December 2005/January 2006 issue of Innovate, an "open access" online, peer-reviewed journal published by Nova Southeastern University's Fischler School of Education and Human Services, examines the perception gap between teachers and students. Bowen states that although teachers are increasing technology integration in the curriculum, they are only providing those technologies with which they feel comfortable. Therefore, students are left feeling frustrated with seeking change at the design and access levels.
The generation of today requires the "on demand" mindset that is a direct result of the digital technology made available to them. Students expect to be given choices to choose from and "value the skill of finding information over knowing it." Bowen states that there is a need in the educational system to "think about how we can create spaces within the institutional structures where students' ideas, concerns, and dreams can become part of the conversation at a stage where it can actually influence decision-making."
Gaming and Simulation Techniques as a Tool to Engage Online Learners
As online instruction delivery continues to grow in popularity, educational arenas are utilizing significant tools such as gaming in order to engage and challenge the online learner. Gaming and simulation techniques in distance learning are major areas of interest in today's U.S. Army training.
The U.S. Army Armor School in association with the University of Louisville and its partner the Northrop Grumman Mission Systems announced the design of its interactive gaming and simulation online course which revolves around three vignettes simulating realistic combat situations while keeping the learners focused on army protocols.
The article, entitled "Applying Gaming and Simulation Techniques to the Design of Online Instruction," published in the December 2005/January 2006 Innovate online journal, states that "gaming and simulation may be two of the most powerful tools available to those who design online instruction because they engage and challenge the learner in a very personal way."
Other articles in the December/January issue of Innovate look at E- Portfolios as the next tool in teacher preparation; the incorporation of technology and pedagogy into online coursework; and a discussion on an alternative to Blackboard and WebCT.
Innovate is a bimonthly, peer-reviewed online periodical published by the Fischler School of Education and Human Services at Nova Southeastern University.
