Dec. 15--TOKYO -- Japan Airlines Corp. and Yahoo Japan Corp. said Thursday they have decided to introduce a joint system to let customers who have accumulated points under their respective customer reward plans exchange them for each other's products and services.
Under the arrangement, passengers who have flown with JAL will be able to use points they have earned under JAL's mileage program to purchase goods online through websites operated by Yahoo Japan, and customers of the portal site operator will be eligible for discounts offered by the major airline.
As a first step, website Yahoo! Travel began accepting reservations for JAL's domestic flights on Thursday.
Next spring, the two companies will begin their point exchange services.
A similar deal has already been struck between All Nippon Airways Co. and online shopping mall operator Rakuten Inc.
JAL and Yahoo Japan said they also plan to sell overseas tour packages of JAL group companies through Yahoo.
With the business tie-up, JAL said it expects to increase its annual earnings by several billion yen.
