Dec. 17--Reconstruction of North Roosevelt Boulevard in Key West is getting shuffled to the back burner once again due in part to Hurricane Wilma.
The Florida Department of Transportation is scheduled to present an update of its five-year construction plan Wednesday to the Monroe County Commission, which meets in regular session beginning at 9 a.m. at the Marathon Government. The DOT presentation begins at 11.
Key West Assistant City Manager John Jones has been following the Roosevelt repair for years. Originally it was slated to be redone in 2006. Later it was delayed until 2008. The newest plan moves it to 2011.
“They keep pushing it back," Jones said. “The good news is, we'll be working on the sidewalks and paving the promenade. They released the money for us to do that."
Bike riders and pedestrians have noted the rapid deterioration of the promenade, especially over the past two hurricane seasons.
“We still have storm-damage problems," Jones said. “That seawall was built in 1920. I don't know how long it's going to last."
In the meantime, work on South Roosevelt Boulevard improvements is slated to begin at the start of the year, according to the plan.
Also on the County Commission agenda:
-- Approval to spend $25,000 to redesign the Higgs Beach pier in Key West. Hurricane Wilma destroyed the pier. Though in Key West, Higgs Beach and the pier belong to the county.
-- Approval to excavate at the end of Crane Boulevard in the Lower Keys to fill for an eventual playing field at Sugarloaf School.
-- Approval of a grant application for the purchase of two buses. The county provides bus service from Marathon to Key West using six Key West city buses. These buses would supplement that route.
-- A resolution that would request the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service prohibit masted vessels from anchoring in Pine Channel near the power lines. During past storm seasons, vessels have come unstuck from their moorings and tangled in the tie lines, cutting off power for all of the Lower Keys. Pine Channel is between Big Pine Key and Little Torch Key.
-- A presentation of a marina management plan to address preservation of the working waterfront in the Florida Keys.
