REDMOND, Wash. - Microsoft Corp. on Thursday released a beta version of new computer server technology to support instant-messaging and other services for businesses.
The software, codenamed Greenwich, includes security features, user authentication tools and a platform that supports sharing of data, video and voice from computer to computer.
Microsoft expects to release the final version of the technology later this year, said Ed Simnett, Microsoft's lead product manager for real-time communications.
The new technology will be Microsoft's biggest push to date to secure a share of the growing market of businesses who communicate in-house or with customers over instant-messaging networks. Companies also use messaging technology from IBM and America Online.
"We're very comfortable that the market here is large, probably as large as e-mail in terms of enterprise users," Simnett said.
