Shipping tonnage through the Tulsa Port of Catoosa is recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina.
There is an increase in the number of barges in our channel as barges that had been diverted to the Mississippi River returned to the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, said Jerry Goodwin, chairman of the City of Tulsa-Rogers County Port Authority.
Shipments of wheat, soy beans, steel, pipe and project cargo increased during November.
There were 16 barge loads of soy beans shipped out of the Port in November, of which the equivalent of six barge loads had been stored on the ground because of the barge shortage, he said. That's 50 million pounds of beans that moved through the port in one month. said Goodwin.
Shipment to and from the Port of Catoosa during November totaled 138,000 tons of cargo in 84 barges, up from 121,000 tons in 67 barges in October and but down from 177,000 tons in 105 barges in November 2004.
November's outbound shipments totaled 76,000 tons in 44 barges, up from 55,000 tons in 26 barges in October but down from 97,000 tons in 52 barges for November 2004.
Inbound shipments totaled 62,000 tons in 40 barges, down from 67,000 tons in 41 barges for October and 80,000 tons in 53 barges for November 2004.
The Oklahoma segment of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System reported 363,000 tons in November, up from the 336,000 tons shipped during October. In November 2004, a total of 374,000 tons were recorded. During November, 38 percent of the McCellan-Kerr traffic went to or from the Tulsa Port of Catoosa.
A total of 1.12 million tons of cargo were shipped on the entire McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System in November with 12 percent passing through the Tulsa Port of Catoosa.
The 2,000-acre Port of Catoosa industrial complex includes 62 companies with 3,500 employees.
