DAYTON -- Time Warner Cable announced Thursday which channels it will include in its Family Choice Tier, a 15-channel package aimed at content-conscience parents.

The channels include Boomerang, C-SPAN2, C-SPAN3, CNN Headline News, The Science Channel, Discovery Kids, Disney Channel, DIY Network, FITTV, Food Network, HGTV, La Familia, Nick Games & Sports, The Weather Channel and Toon Disney.

The new tier, available to any customer subscribing to the minimum basic cable tier, will cost $12.99 a month.

The basic level includes local broadcast stations, public/ education and governmental access channels and other select channels.

Even though the new Family Choice Tier is not part of the company's digital cable service, it does require a digital cable box for viewing. Boxes are an additional $7.95 per month per box.

The tier will be available by April.

Channels being offered as part of the Tier will continue to be made available in their existing packages.

Time Warner, Comcast and other cable companies announced Monday they will begin offering family channel tiers to give parents more control over the television programs their children watch. The federal government has encouraged the cable industry to make it easier for parents to monitor programing.

Glenn Britt, chairman and chief executive of Time Warner, said the channels were chosen because of their G-rated nature, lack of "live" programming and large family audiences.
