Nokia launches touch screen mobile that enables TV viewing, fast

Posted on: Tuesday, 28 October 2003, 06:00 CST

HELSINKI, Finland (AP) -- Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, on Tuesday launched a cellular phone with a wide, color, touch screen that enables users to watch television and browse the Internet over high-speed networks.

The Nokia 7700, unveiled at an Internet conference in Nice, France, has a screen resolution of 640 X 320 pixels and an internal memory of 64 MB that can be expanded.

The 65,000-color touch screen eliminates the use of a number keypad, and the device features music and video playback, a digital camera, FM radio and multimedia messaging. It works on various networks, including GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) 900/1800/1900.

Users will be able to store music and video files and connect to personal computers as well as use a handsfree wireless headset. The initial price of the Nokia 7700 will be about Ç500 (US$590).

Nokia also unveiled other handsets, including the 6230 model, a tri-band phone with a digital camera, MP3 player and multiple connectivity options via EDGE and Bluetooth; the 7200, featuring a camera and folding ornamental textile covers, as well as the 6810 and 6820 with full keyboards to enable fast text messaging and mobile e-mails.

The Finland-based company expects to almost double the number of cell phone models using EDGE technology to 15, shipping about 100 million handsets by the end of 2005.

Last week, Nokia said initial sales of its much-hyped N-Gage -- a hybrid cellular phone and gaming console -- topped 400,000 since its release earlier this month, in line with its estimates.

Nokia also said Tuesday that it will withdraw its shares from the London Stock Exchange because of low trading volumes. The exchange accounts for less than 1 percent of all Nokia shares traded worldwide.

Nokia shares will continue to be traded in Helsinki, which accounts for 60 percent of all its traded shares, as well as in Frankfurt, Paris and New York.

Nokia is the world market leader for cell phones, with about 36 percent of all mobile handsets sold, according to Gartner Dataquest. Last year, Nokia claimed a 38 percent market share.

Based in Espoo, just outside the Finnish capital, it has sales in 130 countries with 53,000 employees.
