Norway's Largest Telco to Deploy Kasenna(TM) Software for VOD Service Offering

Posted on: Monday, 13 October 2003, 06:00 CDT

GENEVA, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Kasenna, the leading provider of software- based solutions for on-demand video, announced today that its technology will be deployed for video-on-demand (VOD) services by another major telecommunications company. Telenor, Norway's largest telco, will deploy Kasenna's award-winning MediaBase XMP software to manage, distribute and deliver video content for the VOD portion of their paid-subscription BIT, Broadband, Internet and TV over VDSL service. The service, which was launched 1st of October, will initially be offered in a trial to approximately 700 paying subscribers.

"Our initial goal is to test the commercial viability of this service," said Richard Skjarstad, Corporate Project Manager for Telenor's BIT service project. "Kasenna's technology allows us to scale as we grow with the assurance that as new IP-based access technologies arrive, we can seamlessly integrate them into our VOD platform."

With Kasenna's MediaBase XMP software, Telenor's BIT system is able to capture live video feeds as well as receive pre-encoded video files at bit rates up to 6.5Mbps at the Oslo-based video headend. From there, the system intelligently distributes the files to the playout server at Stavanger in southern Norway. Kasenna's technology provides a standards-based video delivery platform for acquiring, managing, distributing, and delivering audio and video on demand at the industry's lowest cost per stream. Available for Irix, Linux and Solaris operating systems, MediaBase XMP is the industry's first and only full-featured platform that handles deployment of video from narrowband to broadband to broadcast using open standards (MPEG-4, MPEG-1, MPEG-2). The BIT trial also includes middleware from Myrio for the user interface and back office management, a broadband access platform from Next Level Communication, and servers and storage from Sun Microsystems.

"Telenor's trial deployment highlights a trend among service providers who want an intelligent way to prove their business models while keeping their costs down," said Mark Gray, Chairman and CEO of Kasenna. "MediaBase XMP's ability to scale down to easily fit in trial deployments and offer a growth path for large scale offerings is the perfect solution for providers seeking to deliver on-demand services to their subscribers."
