Texas Instruments to Buy Norwegian Firm

Dec. 22--Texas Instruments will acquire Norway-based Chipcon, a manufacturer of radio-frequency transceiver devices, the semiconductor giant announced Wednesday.

TI paid about $200 million for the company, which will be come a wholly owned subsidiary.

Chipcon has about 120 employees and will continue to operate from its headquarters in Oslo, Norway.

Chipcon's low-power, short-range radio-frequency transceiver devices are used in numerous wireless devices including wireless keyboards.

The company's technology will dovetail nicely with TI's low-power wireless technologies, Chipcon President and Chief Executive Geir Forre said in a statement.

TI said it expects the deal to be finalized in January. Shares of Texas Instruments (ticker: TXN) rose 23 cents to close at $32.07.
