Dec. 22--LIMA -- Mike O'Connor is so glad to see something going right for Lima that he decided to share it with anyone who wants to see.
O'Connor's WCOIL Internet company and Say Security teamed up to install a wireless Web camera on top of a water tower on Metcalf Street. The view shows work crews installing a foundation at the former Lima Locomotive Works, the first step in the construction of Global Energy's $800 million power plant.
"It's an exciting thing for Lima. Obviously, it's been in the works for a while, and it's nice to see it come to fruition," O'- Connor said. "Once the structure starts going up, I think a lot of people will look at it."
The camera, which runs almost as quickly as a normal video feed, shows workers and earth movers roaming over the site. Lima Mayor David Berger said it's impossible to see the large holes now in the ground, up to 50 feet deep, as Global lays the foundation for a fuel storage building.
The camera is able to pan from side to side enough to view the whole site, and can zoom in, as well. Berger said Global will have most of the control over the camera, though the city will have some, as well.
WCOIL and Say donated the equipment and services, meaning the city isn't spending any money on the project. The camera's view is accessible through the city's Web site, at http://www.cityhall.lima.oh.us.
The site also has photographs of some of the other work going on at the site, Berger said.
