An overwhelming number of respondents to our Web business poll last week favors banning or limiting cell phone use while driving.
We asked: Should cell phone use be banned while driving?
Out of a total of 270 voting, 192, or 71 percent, said "Yes, it would make the roads safer for all of us."
Sixty-six people, or 24 percent, said "No, drivers can handle all kinds of distractions." Only 12 people, or 5 percent, said they were not sure.
"The greatest lifesaver in a car can be a cell phone; if you're having mechanical difficulties, a flat tire, or you are lost or feel threatened in any way, being able to use a cell phone is invaluable," one reader said. "I don't know how cell phone usage could be monitored as far as urgent or non-urgent usage, but clearly they should not be banned in every instance."
Another voter said they are no different than back in the days of CB radios, and several people said they should not be banned, "but if it's the cause of an accident I think there should be heavy fines."
But other respondents said that cell phones should only be used in the case of an emergency.
"If you are having mechanical difficulties or a flat tire, you will not be driving down the road. Nobody is saying you can't use the phone in your car while sitting still on the side of the highway. The problems arise when people are paying more attention to calling or (talking on) their cell phones than paying attention to their driving."
Poll results are unofficial and not scientific.
