Zambia, Mozambique sign road transport agreement to boost trade
LUSAKA, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian and Mozambican governments signed an agreement here on Thursday on road transport of passengers and goods in a bid to promote the bilateral trade between the two countries.
"There is need for Zambia to sign an agreement with Mozambique that will facilitate a smoother cross-boarder conveyance of goods and passengers and generally bolster our regional ties," Zambian Minister of Communications and Transport Abel Chambeshi was quoted by Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) as saying.
The minister also reiterated the need to remove unnecessary barriers in promoting trade as well as to smoothen the flow of road transportation between the two countries.
Chambeshi pointed out that for a long time Zambia has been seeking the opportunity of maximizing utilization of the coastal areas of Mozambique as an exit for the country's exports and an entry for its imports.
The agreement will among other objectives aim at promoting and regulating the free-flow of goods and passenger traffic across the common boarders.
The agreement will also establish joint working groups such as the Route Management Groups and facilitate the removal of non- physical barriers so as to encourage single permit system.
And Mozambican Minister of Communications and Transport Antonio Munguambe said the signed treaty would enhance the development of tourism, commerce and industry between the two countries.
He added that the agreement will also help create a smooth, reliable and efficient road transportation system and promote the maximization of use of the Beira Development Corridor, which provides Zambia with a direct access to the maritime transport via the port of Beira.
