3 PBS programs will take varied looks at storm

Hurricane Katrina will be the subject of three programs this week on PBS, one premiering tonight, Nov. 20.

At 7 p.m., an episode of Nature, Katrinas Animal Rescue, will focus on the tens of thousands of household pets separated from their owners after Hurricane Katrina. Animal rescue teams take small boats through the flooded streets of New Orleans searching for surviving pets. Amidst all the chaos, some are shown actually being reunited with their owners. The show also looks at what happened to New Orleans other animals, those at the Aquarium of the Americas, the Audubon Zoo and in Lake Pontchartrain.

The focus switches to humans and property Tuesday, Nov. 22, with NOVAs The Storm that Drowned New Orleans at 7 p.m. and Frontlines The Storm at 8 p.m.

The NOVA documentary reconstructs the hurricane with a minute-by- minute account using eyewitness testimony. The program also explores why the storm was so deadly and why flood defenses and relief planning were so inadequate.

Frontline examines the chain of decisions that slowed federal response to Katrina and the state of Americas disaster-response system. Look for interviews with former Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown, his first televised interview since he resigned. Correspondent Martin Smith also talks to Gov. Kathleen Blanco, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, former Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge and former Deputy Secretary James Loy.

All three programs will air locally on WLPB (cable Channel 12).
