Raptor Networks Announces Significant Results of Initial Benchmark Testing of Ether-Raptor ER-1000 and ER-1010 Switching Systems

Posted on: Tuesday, 4 November 2003, 06:00 CST

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Pacific InterMedia, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: PFII) wholly-owned subsidiary Raptor Networks Technology, Inc. announced today significant results of benchmark testing of Ether-Raptor ER-1000 and ER-1010 switches. Ether-Raptor 1010 will be shipped this week to the Company's European distributor for immediate delivery to an end-user customer.

Edwin Hoffman, CTO stated, "These results are evidence of what we have produced -- a switching system that achieves true wire-speed operation combined with, to our knowledge, the lowest latency figures available in any system today. 'Wire-speed' is the maximum speed at which switch equipment operates. 'Latency' is the time taken for data to travel, depending on distance, type of information sent and equipment used. Maximizing wire-speed and minimizing latency, enables modern applications to be implemented such as Voice over IP, Video over IP, and Storage over IP. High latency, the enemy of all modern applications, is a significant problem with switching systems. If not resolved, high latency restricts today's use of modern applications and, results in attempted solutions that can be more costly than originally planned for. The low latency numbers achieved with the Ether-Raptor switch family allows end-users to successfully implement these applications at a lower cost of ownership and therefore enable modern high bandwidth applications to be utilized.

ER-1000 is a 24 Port Gigabit Ethernet Layer 2/3/4 switch with wire-speed operation on all ports and unique cable handling capabilities and an extensive Layer 2/3/4 feature set. ER-1010 is a 24 port Gigabit Ethernet Layer 2/3/4 switch with up to 6 ports of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, with wire-speed operation on all ports and unique cable handling on both Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit ports. The same extensive Layer 2/3/4 feature set is also supported in this system.

About Raptor Networks Technology

Raptor has designed a series of related products it calls the Ether-Raptor line, a modular set of Ethernet switching components based on a common set of proprietary hardware and software modules. In the Company's view, its Ether-Raptor family of products have universal application to users' internetworking requirements and can be utilized anywhere on a network where a switch is required.

New applications such as video on demand, remote synchronous data storage mirroring, disaster recovery and super computer clustering are a few of the network applications types that will generate increased and new revenue streams for any enterprise offering them. The cost to replace or upgrade existing networks with requisite, efficient high bandwidth infrastructure causes these new applications to be financially prohibitive.

By optimizing the handling of all data packets on a network treating them as though they were all video data, Raptor enables true wire speed networks and achieves two objectives for the user community. First, it enables voice, video, storage and other sophisticated applications that enterprises will use to establish new revenue streams at a justifiable cost. Secondly, that ability is accomplished by augmenting, rather than replacing, the existing internetworking infrastructure those enterprises now use, leveraging existing capital investment in place by the user, minimizing the additional capital expense required for supporting these new applications and leading to increased user revenue opportunities. Raptor has recently applied for nine patents.

Ether-Raptor 1010, is commercially available and is shipping this week. The Company expects additional products in the Ether-Raptor line, the Ether-Raptor 1000 and 1800, to be available for shipping by the end of the year.
