Hughes Network Systems Provides KT Corporation With Global Broadband Satellite Network Solution

GERMANTOWN, Md., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HNS), the world's leading provider of broadband satellite solutions, announced today that it is supplying KT Corporation (Korea Telecom) with a comprehensive satellite network solution to provide broadband connectivity to enterprises on a global basis.
Utilizing HNS' broadband satellite technology, KT is offering a full range of IP-based applications including interactive data, video conferencing, Voice over IP (VoIP), and numerous other next-generation applications. The network solution consists of multiple Network Operations Centers (NOCs), which enables KT to offer high-performance communications links to entities with sites located in countries outside Korea. Multi-national corporations, government institutions, and global non-profit organizations (GNOs) are just some of the customers that will benefit from this network.
Daewoo E&C (Engineering and Construction) is the first Korean company to adopt VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) technology at overseas sites in order to expand its network globally. KT and Daewoo Information Systems together implemented the HNS network solution at eight Daewoo E&C sites in Nigeria, connecting them to its headquarters in Korea.
As the terrestrial communications infrastructure is not well developed in Nigeria, Daewoo workers experienced a great deal of difficulty communicating with headquarters and their families in Korea before the adoption of the VSAT solution. They now enjoy high quality, two-way broadband services such as Web surfing, corporate intranet access and VoIP from remote satellite terminals in Nigeria, utilizing KT's NOC at Kumsan earth station. The system not only reduces the information gap between overseas construction sites and headquarters, but also improves the morale and welfare of the Daewoo workers and their families.
"This network provides ubiquitous coverage across the globe for corporations headquartered in Korea," said Mr. Sang Ku Chang, director of KT Satellite Operations. "KT plans to expand two-way satellite multimedia services to several companies in Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia."
"South Korea leads the Asia/Pacific region in the adoption of broadband technology and Internet access penetration. We have previously supplied KT with over 3000 DW terminals and are proud to expand our relationship for the provision of global broadband services," said Ramesh Ramaswamy, managing director of the Asia/Pacific region for Hughes Network Systems.
