Jan. 4--Kasey Davis, a redshirt freshman kicker at TCU, was fatally shot early Tuesday at an apartment complex in his hometown of Conroe, police said.

Davis, 20, was found inside his car at 12:30 a.m. by Conroe police with a single gunshot wound to his chest. The car was parked at the Forest Creek Apartments.

Davis was taken to Conroe Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead at 1:52 a.m., according to police.

Police arrested Jeffrey Clay Lasiter, 40, about one mile from the crime scene and charged him with Davis' murder. Lasiter was being held at the Montgomery County Jail on Tuesday, with bond set at $100,000.

Conroe police spokesman Sgt. Bob Berry said investigators have not determined a motive, but believe that Davis had never met the suspect before the shooting.

Davis was home visiting family and friends over the holidays after the Horned Frogs' Houston Bowl victory Saturday.

"We've determined the hows of the case, but we're still working on the whys," Berry said. "The suspect is 20 years older than him, so we know it wasn't someone that he knew. We have no information suggesting that they had prior contact before the incident."

Berry said investigators determined that when shot, Davis was inside his vehicle looking for a place to park. Davis has a friend who lives in the complex.

Davis was with his girlfriend inside the idling vehicle when the suspect approached the driver's window and shot Davis in the chest, Berry said. Police have not released the name of Davis' girlfriend.

Berry said police believe the motive wasn't robbery, road rage or gang-related.

Lt. Russell Reynolds said, however, that Lasiter hasn't cooperated with police regarding his motive.

Lasiter was arrested after a traffic stop about three minutes after police responded to a 911 call. Witnesses' descriptions of Lasiter's vehicle helped police locate the suspect.

A police report said the suspect voluntarily pulled over. Police found a rifle in the front seat of Lasiter's vehicle, the report said, and he was charged with murder after questioning.

"We're investigating two or three different possible motives, but we're not going to speculate on each one until we have determined the motive," Berry said.

TCU coach Gary Patterson said the news came as a shock to his team.

"We're deeply saddened to hear about this incident," Patterson said. "Kasey was a great kid and he had a great future at TCU. He was very well-liked by his teammates, and he's going to be greatly missed. Our hearts are with his family."

Davis' teammates were not made available for comment, and members of his immediate family could not immediately be reached.

Patterson said his coaching staff spent Tuesday morning contacting players who were close to Davis and that special-teams coach Dan Sharp was in touch with Davis' family.

Davis, a 6-foot-3, 213-pound freshman, walked on to the team in 2004 and participated in two games this season as a kickoff specialist. He was an arts and sciences major.

Davis played two seasons at Conroe High School. He was first-team all-district punter and an honorable mention all-district place kicker.
