Jan. 4--WILKES-BARRE -- A man was hospitalized after he was shot at least three times Tuesday night at a downtown gas station as his wife and gas station employees looked on, police said.

The man was shot at about 10:35 p.m. while his car was parked in the third gas bay of the Uni-Mart at 94 S. Pennsylvania Ave. The victim's identity was not released by the Wilkes-Barre police department as of press time.

Det. Robert Zavada of the Wilkes-Barre police said the victim was taken to Scranton Community Medical Center for treatment, but it's unclear where he was shot.

No arrests were made as of 11:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Joseph Boos. Early this morning, police put out a description of a suspect in the shooting. Police said he is a skinny, light-skinned black male, about 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall, wearing a red hat, red hoodie and black pants. He was seen leaving in a 2005 or 2006 silver Mitsubishi Outlander.

A young woman walked out of the gas station shortly after police arrived. When asked what transpired just moments earlier she said, "My husband was shot." She didn't want to say anything else about the shooting.

The store's owner came to the station afterward to help police review video surveillance footage of the exterior of the store.

Zavada picked up two spent rounds from the pavement just behind the victim's older model Ford Crown Victoria that was surrounded by yellow police tape.

Zavada said more information about the shooting is expected to be released by the department today. Employees, concerned about their personal safety, did not wish to comment.
