Charys Holdings Company Subsidiary - Viasys Network Services - Achieves Acceptance for Advanced Wireless Video Surveillance System on Mass Transit Systems

ATLANTA, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Viasys Network Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Charys Holding Company, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: CHYS.OB) , today announced that it has been awarded acceptance for an innovative, federally funded wireless transit surveillance system by the consulting engineer of record. Acceptance follows 30 days of rigorous testing to meet specification and performance criteria for a key portion of the iFlorida Project.
The iFlorida Project, formally known as Surface Transportation Security and Reliability Information System Model Deployment, is intended to provide an information infrastructure basis for future deployments throughout the U.S. In March 2003, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) selected Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) as the managing organization for the multi-million dollar project. In January 2005, FDOT selected Viasys as the prime contractor for the LYNX Broadband Wireless Surveillance System.
Viasys, as prime contractor, deployed a state-of the art wireless mesh data network covering Interstate 4 from downtown to the southern Attractions Area in the Orlando area. Viasys also equipped LYNX buses each with three Internet Protocol (IP) cameras, a video storage unit, and a wireless client device. Video is stored locally on the buses and may also be transmitted through the network for real-time display at both the LYNX Operational Center and the FDOT Regional Traffic Management Center (RTMC).
"Acceptance of this system is a watershed moment for wireless data in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), reaffirming Viasys position as an industry leader in mesh system deployment," said Terrell Brown, Business Development Director, Viasys. "Traditionally, communications for ITS have been driven by fiber deployment. However, this system completely validates wireless as a reliable and secure means to transmit broadband data."
The LYNX System will remain operational for a minimum of two years, and may be expanded in the future. "This is another example of how a wireless mesh can be applied to a number of environments and uses," noted Patricio Chandia, Wireless Operations Director at Viasys. "We have deployed wireless mesh systems for police, fire, inspectors, resorts, and now homeland security and we expect this trend to continue through the New Year."
