BRUNSWICK — Three Norfolk Southern Railway freight cars hauling sand derailed Wednesday morning, spilling sand on the tracks near Newcastle and Fourth streets north of downtown.
No injuries were reported, nor was any adjacent property damaged. Motor vehicle traffic was slowed near the scene, according to Sgt. Kevin Jones of the Brunswick Police Department.
The derailment occurred about 1:30 a.m., said Meg Scheu, spokeswoman for CSX Transportation, which owns the railroad tracks.
“The train cars remained upright. They just ran off the track into the dirt. They were leaning, but didn’t fall over,” Jones said.
Workers had restored the cars to the track by 1 p.m. Track damaged in the derailment was expected to be repaired by early evening, Scheu said.
The cause of the derailment wasn’t immediately known, Jones and Scheu said.
