Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport handled more flights than any other airport in the world last year, surpassing Chicago's O'Hare International Airport for the first time in five years.
Hartsfield, the busiest airport by passenger volume since 1998, had 980,197 takeoffs and landings in 2005, up 1.6 percent from the previous year, according to U.S. Federal Aviation Administration records. O'Hare operations fell 2 percent to 972,246 in the same period, the FAA said. Delta Air Lines cut back operations at Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport and shifted some of the flights to its base in Atlanta.
Airlines including United Airlines and American Airlines have cut flights at O'Hare since November 2004 because of congestion there.
